The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has launched a new initiative aimed at addressing the growing concerns surrounding work-life balance and stress management within the accounting profession. This move follows recent incidents that have drawn attention to the severe mental health challenges professionals face due to excessive work pressures. To tackle these issues, ICAI has established a dedicated group led by additional director Seema Gerotra to create structured support mechanisms for its members and students.

ICAI has long been aware of the stressful conditions faced by professionals and has actively implemented various initiatives to promote well-being. According to an official statement, the institute has organized several health and wellness programs in the past, such as health awareness camps, webinars focused on stress management, yoga sessions, and motivational conferences. Additionally, physical activities such as walkathons and marathons have been conducted to promote a healthy work-life balance and enhance both mental and physical well-being.

ICAI has long recognised the challenges of stressful work conditions and has proactively implemented various measures to support the well-being of its members and students.

One of the major steps ICAI has already taken is the establishment of a Grievance Redressal Cell, which caters to the concerns of members, students, and employees. This cell is designed to provide structured and empathetic resolutions to complaints and has undergone continuous improvements for more effective responses.

ICAI's latest set of initiatives focuses on promoting a balanced work environment by enhancing existing wellness programs and introducing new ones. One of the primary goals is to spread awareness about maintaining a work-life balance through regular workshops and webinars that focus on physical activity, mindfulness, and emotional well-being. These events emphasize how professionals can manage their career demands without compromising their personal lives.

In addition, ICAI is committed to launching comprehensive stress management programs. These initiatives will be carried out in collaboration with health institutions and will provide access to counselling services, mental health support, and other resources aimed at reducing stress among professionals. This will benefit both current members and students of ICAI.

Another major focus for ICAI is collaborating with industry partners to promote more flexible working conditions. This includes the adoption of remote work, flexible working hours, and wellness programs that will enable professionals to better manage their personal and professional responsibilities. ICAI also seeks to encourage the industry to adopt best practices that contribute to a healthier work environment.

ICAI will continue to conduct regular workshops, webinars, and awareness campaigns promoting physical activity, mindfulness, and emotional well-being.

To further strengthen support systems within the profession, ICAI plans to develop peer support networks. These networks will allow members to share their experiences, seek advice, and work together to overcome challenges related to stress and mental health. Such platforms will create a more collaborative environment where members can openly discuss issues and solutions.

In an effort to provide more immediate assistance, ICAI is setting up a counselling helpline within its National Call Centre. This helpline will be specifically geared towards helping members with stress management and work-life balance concerns. It will provide a direct line of communication for individuals seeking guidance and mental health support.
