Around 35 students from a private school in North Chennai were rushed to the hospital on 24/10/2024, thursday after experiencing giddiness, throat irritation, and eye discomfort. Following their complaints, the school management decided to transport the students to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure. At least three of the affected students were later shifted to a private hospital for further medical evaluation.

Concerned parents gathered at the hospital, eager to take their children home after receiving updates on their condition. The students reportedly began to feel dizzy and experienced eye irritation after being exposed to an unknown gas, potentially from the school’s science laboratory or the surrounding area. However, the exact source of the exposure has not yet been determined. “We cannot confirm the cause at the moment, but we are investigating all possibilities,” a police official said. “More clarity on the situation should emerge within an hour.”

Given that the school is located in an industrial zone with several refineries and factories, officials are leaving no angle unexplored. North Chennai has a history of chemical leaks, with previous incidents involving ammonia leaks in the region.

A detailed investigation has been launched to determine the source of the gas exposure. Government officials are analyzing air samples taken from the school premises to rule out the possibility of an industrial leak. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has also reached the site to assist with the investigation and ensure the safety of students and staff.

In the meantime, both parents and authorities are waiting for the results of the probe to understand what caused the children’s symptoms. The school administration has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident. Officials have assured that any potential safety lapses, either by the school or nearby industries, will be addressed once the investigation is complete.

This incident has heightened concerns about air quality and chemical safety protocols in the industrial areas surrounding educational institutions. Authorities are working to ensure such situations are avoided in the future.

Authorities have assured parents and the public that all necessary steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. As the investigation progresses, officials are focused on identifying the source of the exposure and addressing any safety lapses. The incident has reignited discussions on the importance of stringent safety protocols and air quality monitoring, especially in schools located near industrial zones. Meanwhile, parents and school staff remain vigilant, hoping for swift action and long-term solutions to safeguard students’ health and well-being.
