Indore: 8 Patients Experience Side Effects Post Cataract Surgery

According to the officials, eight persons reportedly suffered side effects post-cataract surgery at a hospital in Indore last month

8 patients who underwent cataract surgery at a hospital in Indore experienced side effects post-surgery.

According to the officials, eight persons reportedly suffered side effects post-cataract surgery at a hospital in Indore last month. The local authorities sealed the medical facilities' operation theater and initiated an inquiry into the issue.

The authorities said that it is difficult to say whether these patients have lost their vision or not, and things will be clear after the inquiry. However, a managing trustee of the hospital said that there was no negligence and contended that the eight patients had suffered a reaction in their eyes due to unknown reasons, and all the affected patients received the required treatment and were discharged.

District Blindness Control Society manager Dr. Pradeep Goyal said that the local authorities have formed a three-member committee, and the committee has initiated an investigation into the causes of the side effects experienced by the patients. Dr. Pradeep said that on March 20, the cataract surgeries, funded by the government were performed on 79 patients at Choithram Netralaya in Madhya Pradesh under the National Programme for Control of Blindness. Post surgeries, the hospital management informed the health department about the side effects in the eyes of 8 patients. He also said that it is very hard to tell right now whether the patients who underwent the cataract surgery have lost their vision or not. The circumstances will become clear only after the inquiry is concluded. The hospital’s operation theater, where the cataract surgeries were conducted on these patients, has been sealed.

The managing trustee of the Choithram Netralaya Ashwini Verma contended that there was no negligence on the side of the hospital during the cataract operation camp. He said that the eight patients, locales of various districts of Indore division, who attended the cataract operation camp experienced a reaction in their eyes due to unknown reasons, and they were discharged after receiving treatment from the hospital.
