Welcome to India, the new epi-centre of wellness tourism, where the Ministry of Tourism is setting the stage for a booming future in health and healing. Grab your virtual passport, and let’s dive into the exciting developments shaping India’s wellness tourism landscape!

Combining a health check-up with a bit of cultural exploration is now a reality in India. This vibrant nation is not only a destination but a transformative experience where “Vasudhaiva kutumbakam” (the world is one family) and “Atithi Devo Bhava” (the guest is God) come to life.

With the Indian government’s latest push to elevate wellness tourism, the country is poised to become a global beacon for health, healing, and holistic well-being. Let’s take a closer look at what’s on the horizon for this vibrant sector!

A Vision of Wellness: India’s New Strategy

The Ministry of Tourism is not just dreaming of a thriving wellness sector—they’re crafting a blueprint for its success. The plan involves showcasing India's diverse wellness offerings through an enhanced promotional campaign.

As part of this initiative, India will spotlight its rich heritage of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (AYUSH). This campaign, as part of the Incredible India series, will invite the world to experience India's holistic approach to health. (1)

To propel India to the forefront of global wellness tourism, the Ministry is ramping up efforts through several key strategies:

  1. Market Development Assistance Scheme: The Ministry will strengthen this scheme to provide financial and promotional support to stakeholders in the wellness industry. This initiative aligns perfectly with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) vision, empowering local businesses to reach international markets.

  2. Public-Private Partnerships: Encouraging collaboration between public institutions and private enterprises, the Ministry aims to create innovative wellness tourism products and destinations.

  3. Quality Assurance and Regulation: A new emphasis will be placed on quality assurance through regulation, standardisation, and accreditation. By streamlining institutional procedures, the Ministry ensures that every aspect of wellness tourism adheres to high standards, providing a top-notch experience for all visitors. (2)

The National Medical & Wellness Tourism Board - India’s Wellness Ambassador

Established in 2015, the National Medical & Wellness Tourism Board (NMWTB) serves as the main institution driving India’s wellness tourism agenda. Headed by the Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, the Board functions as a one-stop centre for promoting medical and wellness tourism.

The Board’s comprehensive approach involves:

  • Promotion and Business Development: Creating opportunities for growth in the wellness sector and building networks that connect stakeholders.

  • Facilitation and Grievance Redressal: Addressing concerns and streamlining processes to ensure a smooth experience for international visitors. (3)

Sanket Mane, a member of the Medical Tourism Association, in an enlightening conversation with Dr. Aashita Pargal from Medbound Times shared his views on boost in India's health tourism industry-

India's health tourism industry is expected to grow to $13 billion by 2026, with over 2 million foreign patients visiting India every year. The Indian government has also launched initiatives like the "Heal in India" campaign to promote medical tourism in the country

Major hospital chains are expanding their International Presence, setting up outreach offices in new countries to connect with potential patients. For instance, Max Healthcare plans to open three more international offices this financial year, adding to its nine existing ones across Asia and Africa. (5)

Apollo Hospitals, with over 20 international outreach hubs, is eyeing new locations in Congo, Kazakhstan, Mauritius, Liberia, and Iraq(6). Fortis Healthcare is also expanding, with plans to establish new offices in Saudi Arabia and other locations. (7)

These outreach centres act as ‘embassies’ for India’s medical excellence, embodying the spirit of “Vasudhaiva kutumbakam- One Earth, One Family, One Future” by assisting international patients with inquiries, visa processes, travel arrangements, and comprehensive treatment plans.

International patients are flocking to India for a variety of treatments, including organ transplants, cardiac surgeries, oncology, orthopedics, and neurosciences. Dental procedures are also highly sought after due to their affordability and high quality.

Now, let’s talk about the game-changer: Luxury hospitals.

These aren’t your average healthcare facilities. Think hospital rooms that look more like five-star hotel suites, complete with stunning views, gourmet meals, and personalised care that makes you feel like royalty. (8)

From personalised meals tailored to dietary needs to professional care that anticipates every patient’s comfort- luxury hospitals in India are redefining what it means to undergo medical treatment.

It’s healthcare with a side of luxury, because who says you can't have both?

Whether recuperating post-surgery in a private suite with round-the-clock nursing care or undergoing a procedure in a technologically advanced operating room, luxury hospitals ensure that every aspect of the patient’s journey is imbued with comfort, compassion, and uncompromising excellence.

India offers more than just top-notch medical care—it provides a holistic experience that combines healing with cultural immersion.

In the tranquil backwaters of Kerala, patients not only receive Ayurvedic therapies renowned for their healing properties but also find solace in the region's lush greenery and serene waterscapes. Here, traditional healing practices are intertwined with the natural beauty of the surroundings, fostering a deep sense of relaxation and renewal.

Meanwhile, in Rishikesh (aka Yoga Capital of the World) patients can immerse themselves in yoga and meditation retreats that promote holistic well-being.

Dr. Aashita Pargal from Medbound Times spoke with Roma Chib, a yoga practitioner and volunteer at Isha Foundation, to gain insights into the transformative experiences offered-

Yoga sessions offer more than just physical practice; it open doors to deeper dimensions of the self. In our fast-paced world full of emotional and mental stress, this chance to experience something beyond the physical is a true gift. Many come out of curiosity, only to find themselves transformed. As this wave of transformation spreads, it’s bound to increase the number of travellers seeking both healing and adventure in the heart of India’s wellness offerings.

Set against the backdrop of the Himalayas and the flowing Ganges River, Rishikesh offers a spiritual atmosphere conducive to introspection and inner healing. Visitors can participate in daily yoga sessions, learn ancient breathing techniques, and explore spiritual teachings that complement their medical treatments. (9)

Beyond these iconic destinations, India's wellness landscape includes diverse experiences such as wellness spas in the Himalayan foothills, where therapies like crystal healing and sound baths rejuvenate both body and spirit.

Each region of India offers its own unique blend of ancient wisdom and natural beauty, inviting patients to embark on a transformative journey of healing and self-discovery amidst landscapes that inspire serenity and connection to the natural world.

This integration of cultural immersion with wellness practices not only enhances the therapeutic benefits of medical tourism but also reinforces India's position as a global leader in holistic healthcare. Whether seeking relief from chronic ailments or simply pursuing a path to overall well-being, India's holistic experiences promise a profound healing journey that extends far beyond medical treatment alone.

Another major draw for international patients is the Significant Cost Difference between treatments in India and abroad.

For example, a heart bypass surgery in the United States can cost upwards of $120,000, whereas the same procedure in India typically costs between $7,000 to $10,000. Similarly, a hip replacement in the UK might set you back around $40,000, while in India, it costs approximately $7,000. (10)

These drastic price differences, coupled with high-quality care, make India an attractive option for medical tourists seeking affordable yet excellent medical treatments.

The future of medical tourism in India looks bright, but it’s not without challenges. Standardising costs and addressing legal regulations remain key issues.

However, with continued investment in infrastructure and supportive government policies, India is well on its way to becoming a global leader in medical tourism.

Roma Chib (yoga practitioner and volunteer at Isha Foundation), adds to the conversation with Medbound Times, stating:

Globally, people are increasingly drawn to wellness programs, but finding a genuine path in a sea of commercialised yoga options is challenging. Isha Foundation has struck a perfect balance, offering effective free practices via the Sadhguru app. My initial experience with these practices led me to explore more, and the youthful energy of the Isha community is a big part of why their programs are so popular. This authentic approach to wellness is setting a new standard and will undoubtedly continue to attract a growing international audience to India’s wellness tourism scene.

Looking forward, the future of India’s wellness tourism sector is not just promising but exhilarating. The Ministry of Tourism is laying out ambitious plans to further develop the industry, focusing on three main areas:

  1. Expansion of Wellness Retreats: We can expect to see a rise in luxury wellness retreats across India, offering everything from detox programs to spiritual rejuvenation. These retreats will provide immersive experiences, combining state-of-the-art facilities with serene natural environments, appealing to wellness seekers from around the globe.

  2. Integrative Medicine: There will be a growing emphasis on blending traditional AYUSH practices with modern medical treatments. This integrative approach aims to offer holistic solutions that cater to both physical and mental well-being, setting a global benchmark for comprehensive healthcare.

  3. Advanced Telemedicine Services: The expansion of telemedicine will make it easier for international patients to access consultations and follow-up care from leading Indian practitioners, breaking down barriers of distance and accessibility.

As India strides confidently into the future, it will not only continue to build on its existing strengths but also pioneer new frontiers in the global wellness tourism landscape. The nation’s rich heritage, combined with its forward-thinking strategies, positions India to become the premier destination for those seeking health, healing, and holistic wellness.
