In response to an appeal from the Supreme Court, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi declared on Thursday that they would be ending their 11-day strike in protest of the rape and killing of a doctor in Kolkata.
Earlier in the day, the supreme court ordered doctors who were protesting to return to work, promising them that their return would not result in any negative consequences.
Following assurances from the Supreme Court, the 11-day strike by the Indira Gandhi Hospital (IGH) Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) in New Delhi is called off.
"We are resuming duties following the Supreme Court's appeal and assurances and intervention in the RG Kar incident and safety for doctors. We commend the Court's action and call for adherence to its directives. Patient care remains our top priority," the AIIMS Resident Doctors' Association said in a post on X.
OPD services were suspended on August 12th as a result of a nationwide protest initiated by doctor associations. Emergency services kept running as usual.
Nationwide protests were triggered by the junior doctor's violent attack and death. On August 9, her body was discovered inside the chest department's seminar hall at the state-run hospital, bearing serious injury marks. The following day, the Kolkata Police detained a volunteer from the community in relation to the crime.
