Bengaluru Doctors Save 23-Week-Old Premature Twins Weighing 500g Each

The first recorded instance of twins with the lowest birth weight being saved in India

In a remarkable medical achievement, Bengaluru doctors have successfully saved premature twins born at just 23 weeks, weighing a mere 500 grams each. This is the first recorded instance of twins with the lowest birth weight being saved in India.

The twins were delivered at a Bengaluru hospital, where a team of expert doctors and medical staff worked tirelessly to ensure their survival. Given their extremely low birth weight and premature birth, the twins faced numerous health risks, including breathing difficulties, low blood sugar, and infections.
Now that the babies have been discharged, we are conducting a comprehensive long-term follow-up, which is crucial for infants who have been in the NICU. Our main focus at present is on providing early stimulation to help normalize their developmental skills.

The premature twins faced numerous life-threatening challenges. One of the primary concerns was their struggle with breathing. Due to their underdeveloped lungs, the twins required immediate assistance to breathe, and doctors fitted them with ventilators to aid their respiratory function.

Another critical challenge was managing their blood sugar levels. The twins needed constant monitoring to prevent hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, which could have severe consequences on their fragile health. Medical staff closely watched their glucose levels, ensuring timely interventions to maintain stability.

Infections posed a significant threat to the twins' survival. Their underdeveloped immune systems made them highly susceptible to life-threatening infections. Doctors took rigorous precautions to prevent infections, including strict hygiene protocols and close surveillance.

Maintaining body temperature was also a challenge for the twins. With their low body fat, they struggled to regulate their temperature, making them vulnerable to hypothermia.

Medical staff ensured that the twins were kept warm and comfortable, using advanced medical equipment to maintain a stable environment. Despite these challenges, the medical team's prompt and specialized care helped the twins overcome the odds. The hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) played a crucial role in providing the necessary care and support for the twins' growth and development.

The Road to Recovery:

The twins' remarkable recovery is a testament to the hospital's advanced medical facilities and the dedication of its staff. With continued care and nutrition, the twins are expected to lead healthy lives, despite their initial low birth weight.
