MBT Desk

People don’t even bother to verify the identity and check the facts and sources before criticizing and trolling someone on social media. This time, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, a dentist from Kolkata, has become a soft target of the netizens who mistook him for Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Due to the recent incident of rape and murder of a 31-year-old PG trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the ex-principal of the college, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, has been facing heat from the public for his comments and actions, as he blamed the victim for the incident. There has been outrage since then, with many people questioning the involvement of the ex-principal.

After this, the number of people on social media has come down heavily and instead of tagging and commenting on the profile of the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, they started commenting on the profile of another doctor who is also a doctor from Kolkata and has a similar name but is a dental surgeon.

As a result of his similar name and city, he was mistaken for the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and has been receiving hate since then. Because of the hate received, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, a dental surgeon, decided to clarify through a post on social media.

"I and RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh are completely different. I am not associated with RG Kar Medical College, nor have I ever been" said the doctor in his post. (Screenshot of Facebook post by Dr. Sandip Ghosh, a dental surgeon from Kolkata)

He put out a post on his Facebook page in Bengali, which read, “I have noticed one thing since morning: that they are commenting on my profile without checking my Facebook profile properly for matching my name and school. Yes, I am also Dr. Sandip Ghosh. I passed higher secondary from Bangaon High School in 2011, and I am a dental surgeon and MDS from Ahmed Dental College and Hospital. Check out my profile—a special request to all. I and RG Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh are completely different. I am not associated with RG Kar Medical College, nor have I ever been.”

In the post, the doctor clarified that even though he is a doctor with a similar name, he is not associated with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and that people should verify the profile before commenting.

In the recent development of the case, after the CBI took over, the CBI summoned the ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, for questioning. Since the incident, the ex-principal has found himself surrounded by controversy.

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide protest and withdrawal of services for 24 hours starting at 6 a.m. on August 17th because of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The incident has triggered massive protests both in India and internationally, with many demanding stringent punishment for those found guilty and justice for the victim.
