Chhattisgarh: 3-Year-Old Boy Dies after Consuming Dry Ice at Wedding

The dry ice was used in the wedding for special effects like mist.

A 3-year-old boy died in Chattisgarh after consuming dry ice at a wedding earlier this week.

Khushant Sahu, a 3-year-old boy, attended a wedding in a village in Rajnandgaon district in Chattisgarh along with his mother. Khushant consumed dry ice mistaking it as regular ice. The dry ice was used in the wedding for special effects like mist.

The officials said that after returning home the boy felt unwell. His parents immediately rushed him to the hospital, where he passed away during the treatment.

According to the police, the event organizers had utilized the dry ice to create special effects such as mist. The boy mistaking it as regular ice consumed clumps of dry ice.

In March this year, in Gurugram five people were hospitalized after they were served dry ice instead of mouth freshener in a cafe. They mistakenly consumed the dry ice and in the viral video, they a experienced burning sensation in their mouths and vomited blood. Later it was found that the staff served the dry ice to them believing it was mouth freshener.

Dry ice is a cooled and condensed form of carbon dioxide gas. It has a temperature of -78°C. It is used in the medical, food, and beverage industries. Dry ice is also used for special effects in photography, film, and theater. The sublimation of dry ice produces excellent visual effects. However, the major hazards connected with dry ice are cold burns and asphyxiation.
