DHR-ICMR Celebrates Research Excellence with New Initiatives and Awards at 2024 Summit

The Department of Health Research (DHR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) hosted the DHR-ICMR Health Research Excellence Summit 2024 at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. This landmark event commemorated ICMR’s 113th Foundation Day, celebrating over a century of transformative contributions to India’s biomedical research and public health landscape.

The Summit brought together distinguished leaders in healthcare and research, including Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda (via video message); Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare Smt. Anupriya PatelDr. V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog; and Secretary DHR & Director General ICMR, Dr. Rajiv Bahl. The event highlighted ICMR’s legacy and its ongoing efforts to drive innovation and address critical healthcare challenges.

In his address, Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda praised ICMR’s unparalleled contributions. “Today, we celebrate over a century of ICMR’s unwavering commitment to advancing health research and improving the lives of millions,” he stated. Reflecting on ICMR’s accomplishments, he noted its role in combating infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, and COVID-19, alongside advancements in addressing non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, and nutritional disorders. “ICMR has left an indelible mark on India’s healthcare landscape,” he emphasized.

Shri Nadda congratulated the honorees and reaffirmed the importance of recognizing research excellence annually on ICMR’s Foundation Day. “Let this recognition be a reminder that every effort matters and that there are always new opportunities to shine,” he said. He expressed optimism that collaborative efforts would propel India toward a healthier and stronger future.

Smt. Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, inaugurated the Summit, highlighting ICMR’s pivotal role in advancing biomedical research and innovation in India. “ICMR has long been a pioneer in advancing scientific research and innovation,” she said, adding that the institution’s work is pivotal to achieving Viksit Bharat 2047, a vision of a prosperous, self-reliant India.

Smt. Patel emphasized that ICMR’s extramural and intramural programs are driving transformative progress in healthcare, fostering innovation, and addressing pressing health challenges. She noted that India’s scientific landscape is undergoing a significant transformation and commended researchers for their contributions. “Today is a day to remember the countless lives transformed by the contributions of ICMR,” she said, acknowledging the dedication and commitment of the DHR-ICMR team.

Dr. V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, praised ICMR’s achievements and emphasized the importance of research and innovation in positioning India as a global leader in health research. “The advancements we are witnessing today in innovation and research will not only address the pressing health challenges of our time but will also position India as a global leader in health research,” he said. He encouraged continued efforts toward the goal of Viksit Bharat, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary DHR and Director General ICMR, reflected on the Summit’s significance, stating, “The DHR-ICMR Health Research Excellence Summit underscores our unwavering commitment to fostering an environment where impactful research flourishes.” He attributed ICMR’s success to the collective efforts of researchers, institutions, and support teams dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and improving public health.

The Summit also served as a platform to launch key initiatives aimed at strengthening healthcare innovation in India. Among these was the Research Infrastructure Sharing Ecosystem (I-RISE) Policy, which promotes collaboration by expanding access to ICMR’s extensive laboratory and research network. Another highlight was the demonstration of the I-Drone initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 29, 2024, during Ayurveda Day. The initiative was virtually demonstrated by Smt. Anupriya Patel, showcasing its application in healthcare delivery at a Primary Health Centre in Telangana.

Additionally, the Summit unveiled the ICMR History Book, a comprehensive record of the institution’s achievements over its 113-year history. New guidelines on Intellectual Property Policy, CSR Funds, and Technology Transfer were also introduced, establishing a robust framework for fostering innovation, enhancing collaboration, and optimizing resource allocation.

The event celebrated outstanding contributions to medical research by recognizing exceptional researchers, teams, and institutions. Awards were presented in various categories, including Best Research Paper, Best Innovation, Best Team Research, Best Ph.D. Student, and institutional honors for excellence in multidisciplinary research, rural health, diagnostics, and health technology assessments. These accolades underscored the pivotal role of research excellence in shaping India’s healthcare future.
