"Absolute Bonkers" - Doctor Responds To Nikhil Kamath's Podcast

Priyanka Pandey

Days after labeling Samantha Ruth Prabhu as "health illiterate" on her health podcast, "The Liver Doc," Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, aimed at Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha, for a recent podcast in which he discussed the Indian liquor market. The Kerala-born physician charged Mr. Kamath and his companions with "glorifying the business of alcohol" in a lengthy post on X.

One notable podcast is titled 'WTF, Alcohol is a $70B Business in India?' included Shuchir Suri, co-founder of Gin Explorer's Club, Minakshi Singh, co-founder of SideCa, Abhishek Khaitan, MD of Radico Khaitan, and Suraj Shenai, founder of Goa Brewing Co. Mr. Khaitan noted in the podcast that nations that have outlawed alcohol have seen their economy collapse. He went on to say that "drinking alcohol in moderation is very good" before talking about his preferred alcoholic beverage.

Dr. Philips highlighted his everyday experience treating patients suffering from acute liver illnesses and alcohol use disorders, expressing his anger at the careless remarks. Additionally, he attacked the widely held belief that consuming alcohol in moderation is advantageous, labeling it as "health misinformation."

Alcohol is a profitable industry that exploits the lives of others. Governments profit greatly from it through monopolies and taxes; people who control the industry, such as this round table group, see their wealth increase and those who do well in business become barons.

I have to keep bringing up this garbage myth that "alcohol in moderation is good for you" and absurd disclaimer that they call "drink responsibly" to support that myth because when these businessmen start elevating their alcohol business by equating it to "good healthcare intervention," it definitely crosses the line into the realm of health misinformation.

The doctor emphasized even more the terrible effects alcohol use disorder has on families, who find it difficult to pay for necessary medical care as their resources run out. He dispelled several misunderstandings and viewpoints expressed by podcast participants and provided examples of alcohol-related incidents, including incidences involving drunk drivers.

There is no safe level of alcohol that is good for human health and every person who claims drinking in moderation is good for you, is an idiot, intellectually depleted without any regard for fellow humans and lacks compassion. No amount of alcohol is safe because it is not just a liver poison, it is systemic poison. It gets to every part of your body. Even single to lowest exposure can wreck your DNA and promote cancer formation. There is scientific evidence to this.

He provided links to articles to back up his claims.

The physician concluded his lengthy ranting by labeling the podcast as "irresponsible." Podcast discussions like these are helping no one here. Please, do something that helps people out here. Do something good for society, instead of goofing up like this. No one asked for this absolute bonkers of a podcast topic. Irresponsible. The whole team,'' he concluded.
