Doctors Challenge Suspension, Calcutta High Court stays

Doctors accused of ‘threat culture’

MBT Desk

Kolkata: RG Kar Medical College continues to stay in the news for all wrong reasons even months after the shocking revelation of a gruesome event that shook the public consciousness. A woman trainee doctor at Kolkata RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was raped and brutally murdered on the 9th of August 2024.

An internal inquiry committee suspended the doctors for promoting threat culture and intimidation within the hospital premises. The court said that the suspension could not proceed without the approval of the State government or the Health Department

A single-judge bench of Calcutta High Court, on Tuesday, has put an interim stay on the decision of the authorities of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata to suspend 51 doctors attached to the hospital who had been accused of “threat culture” within the hospital premises.

After the R.G. Kar authorities suspended these 51 doctors, some approached the Calcutta High Court and claimed that their suspension was illegal, as they did not have a chance to present their arguments before the probe committee. They also alleged that they were suspended on flimsy grounds.

The matter of suspension of these doctors also came up during the crucial meeting Monday between Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee and junior doctors protesting against the ghastly rape and murder of a junior doctor of R.G. Kar within the hospital premises in August this year.

A Question

"Is this also not a kind of 'threat culture'? No one can face suspension without proper investigation. No one should act according to their whims,” the Chief Minister said.

Aniket Mahato, a face of the movement who represented R.G. Kar in the delegation, immediately countered the Chief Minister’s statements.

“The disciplinary committee suspended these doctors after a proper and thorough investigation. They were not suspended out of personal vendetta. Those who were suspended were notorious criminals,” Mahato said.
