Doctors at Bengaluru’s Victoria Hospital performed surgery and removed a mobile phone from a prisoner's stomach.

The inmate is identified as 38-year-old Parashuram. He is serving a life sentence in Shivamogga district prison. Recently, he complained of severe abdominal pain to the jail staff. They shifted him to a hospital in McGann Teaching District Hospital of Shivamogga. The doctors at the hospital noted that the consumption of foreign bodies was the cause of his pain.

Later he was shifted to Bengaluru’s Victoria Hospital, where the doctors performed an ultrasound scan and found an electronic gadget inside the inmate's stomach. The doctors decided to conduct the surgery to remove the foreign object. After a 75-minutes of critical surgery, the doctors removed a small Chinese keypad mobile phone from his stomach.

Initially, the surgeons used an endoscopy procedure to remove the mobile phone. However, only the battery and back cover of the mobile phone were successfully removed. (Representational image: Wikimedia Commons).

The surgeons said that the inmate carried the mobile phone for about 20 days inside his stomach. Parashuram ingested the small  Chinese mobile and the device was lodged at the pylorus (the end of the stomach that connects to the small intestine) of the stomach.

Initially, the surgeons used an endoscopy procedure to remove the mobile phone. However, only the battery and back cover of the mobile phone were successfully removed. Subsequently, they conducted an exploratory laparotomy and gastrostomy procedure. It is a 75-minute procedure involving an incision into the stomach to remove the foreign body.

The police often conduct routine raids on the jail barracks to check if the prisoners carry items like mobile phones, illicit items, and other banned materials. Parashuram swallowed the mobile phone to avoid the regular checks of the authorities. He never informed the jail authorities that he swallowed a mobile phone. It was revealed only after the doctors found the device in his stomach.  The Superintendent of Shivamogga Central Jail filed a complaint with Tunganagar police station against Parashuram for smuggling the mobile phone into the jail.
