Dr. Munishwar Chandar Dawar has been treating patients for more than 50 years charging only a meager ₹20. Dr. Dawar's efforts would no longer go unnoticed as he is honored with the prestigious Padma Shri Award. Padma Shri is one of the highest civilian awards in India.

A War Veteran as well as a Hero for the Less Fortunate

Dr. Dawar was born before independence in January 1946. After the partition, he moved to Jalandhar in Punjab. He completed his MBBS from Jabalpur in 1967.

Dr. Dawar served in the Indian Army as a doctor during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. He started his practice in 1972 in a small village in Madhya Pradesh.

He noticed that there was a need for affordable healthcare as the people could not afford to pay the high prices. Dr. Dawar, therefore, started treating patients and charged a negligible fee of ₹2.

Dr. Dawar, 77, treats around 200 patients a day and charges a fee of only ₹20. He increased his fee a bit after 50 years.
