MANGALURU: A nine-year-old boy with chronic kidney disease has been given a new lease on life after undergoing a successful kidney transplant at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte, Mangaluru. Notably, the donor was his 64-year-old grandmother, highlighting the hospital's medical excellence and the family's extraordinary love.

A multidisciplinary team from Yenepoya Institute of Nephro-Urology successfully performed the complex kidney transplant procedure. The urology team, led by Dr. Mujeeburahiman M (HOD), included Dr. Altaf Khan, Dr. Nischith D'Souza, and Dr. Sharath D V, along with Vascular Surgeon Dr. Ganesh Kamath. Nephrologists Dr. Santhosh Pai (HOD), Dr. Haisam, Dr. Aditya, and Dr. Preema collaborated closely. Pediatric experts Dr. Sahana and Dr. Arun Varghese provided specialized care. Anaesthesiologists Dr. Thippeswamy and Dr. Mithalee ensured seamless surgical execution.

Following the precise and successful transplant surgery on October 3, the young patient embarked on his recovery path. Medical professionals praised the grandmother's donation as life-changing. Both patients made rapid progress: the grandmother was discharged in four days, and the boy was discharged in 10 days on October 14, with restored kidney function.

Family members and hospital staff rejoiced over the successful transplant, gratefully acknowledging the grandmother's extraordinary generosity and bravery. This heartwarming outcome underscores the transformative power of organ donation, where one selfless decision can profoundly change lives.
