In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurugram successfully removed a cancerous tumor weighing over nine kilograms from a 55-year-old African woman. A statement from Fortis Hospitals described how a team of specialists performed a challenging three-hour surgery to extract the “football-sized” tumor, which had been putting pressure on several key organs.
The procedure was led by Dr. Amit Javed, Director of Gastrointestinal Oncology, who reported that the patient had been experiencing significant abdominal pain for over six months. He noted that she had previously sought treatment in several hospitals in Africa but was denied surgery due to the tumor’s significant size and complex location.
Upon her arrival in India, detailed imaging with CT angiography and PET scans revealed the tumor’s extensive vascular network and compression of essential organs, including her kidneys and urinary pathways. Dr. Javed explained that the tumor’s origin was initially unclear because of its massive size, making the surgery particularly complex.
After the procedure, the tumor was identified as a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), a rare type of cancer originating in the stomach wall.
Dr. Javed explained that if left untreated, the tumor could have led to serious complications, including potentially life-threatening bleeding. Fortunately, the tumor was successfully removed, and the patient is now in recovery.
