In India, people still hesitate to talk about topics like sex life and discussing genitals. But it is very important to pay attention to these topics. The clinical examination of the external genitalia is an essential part of the routine physical examination of all newborns. It is often overlooked, especially penile size/growth.
To break all the myths and taboos, Dr. Madhavi Bharadwaj took to Instagram. Dr. Madhavi Bharadwaj explains how parents are concerned about children’s genitals and sexual health on her Instagram account.
She added that there are still myths and taboos about genitals. Mothers are facing problems with penile size as they age. A few days ago, a new mother came to her who was concerned that her baby’s penile size was still the same from birth up until now. This is a common problem faced by many mothers who remain in self-doubt. 99% of the time, there is no basis for this problem; all of them are ill-founded.
While explaining about genital growth in children, she added that in the penis base, which is known as the mons, there is a big layer of fat. Visually, the penis is small, but it is not like that; actually, some parts of the penis are sunken in layers of fat. Usually, doctors call this the buried penis, not the micropenis. It is not only regarding small children but also regarding big children of about 12–13 years, especially regarding obese children.
The micropenis is known as a small but normally structured penis. Hormonal or genetic factors can cause this condition. Healthcare providers often note the condition during the newborn to early childhood period. 1
Buried penis is a condition in which the penis is of normal size but is hidden under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, or scrotum (the sac beneath the penis that holds the testicles). This condition can affect boys and adult men. 2
Dr. Madhavi also highlighted some myths:
Diaper affects penile size
Diapers affect fertility in the future.
Massage plays a major role in the size and growth of the genitals.
Dr. Madhavi also insisted parents to seek medical assistance instead of using Google to resolve those problems and do not get stressed by listening to other people’s advice.
