Instead of Punishing the Man who Peed on an Old Lady, Air India Tried to Make a Settlement

A woman was purportedly urinated on by Shankar Mishra on November 26 after he had become inebriated. Until a fellow passenger asked him to go back to his seat, he stood there baring himself. The incident took place on an Air India flight traveling from New York to Delhi.

The woman's statement to Air India, which is included in the FIR, described her "abhorrent ordeal." On November 27, the woman wrote to N Chandrasekharan, the chairman of the Air India company. According to the FIR against the perpetrator, Mumbai industrialist Shankar Mishra, Air India didn't call the police until January 4, at midday. The police are still searching for the convicted person.

The woman was deeply traumatized by the whole incident as she mentioned that the Air India personnel had been "very unethical.” They had neglected to ensure the security and integrity of their travelers and had been passive in addressing a delicate and upsetting issue. She had also asked for a refund of the ticket price but had only received a partial one, which was insufficient to make up for the "terrible experience."

As the plane landed, the woman promptly requested Shankar Mishra's arrest, but the crew instead informed her that he wanted to apologize and escorted him to her. Even though she refused to see him, the crew forced her to sit beside him and come to a negotiation.

The woman also stated that the offender began sobbing and pleading hysterically to her, appealing to her not to initiate a lawsuit against him since he is a family guy and did not wish this incident to have an impact on his wife and child. She was taken aback by his sudden and dramatic change of heart. Being forced to face and bargain with the horrifying incident's offender up close further confused her in her already confused state.

“I informed him his acts were unacceptable, but given his begging and pleading in my presence, as well as my own bewilderment and trauma, I felt it difficult to demand his detention or to file a police report,” she claimed.

Moreover, the Air India crew gave Shankar Mishra her contact information so he could pay for her footwear and laundry service, but she returned them since she did not want to have his money.

Air India has been critically uncanny towards its passengers. A similar incident took place on another Air India flight traveling from Paris to Delhi on December 6, 2022, where a drunk traveler peed on a female passenger’s blanket.

As soon as he stepped off the plane, the male suspect was detained by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), but was subsequently released when the two passengers reached a "mutual solution" and the accused presented a "letter of apology," as per media reports.
