The North region has been one of Lebanon's most impoverished regions for a very long time. The first cholera outbreak to hit the nation in 30 years is currently centered there.

Cholera is a bacterial infection that typically spreads through water and causes severe diarrhea and dehydration.

If cholera is not treated right away, it can be fatal.

The field clinic in the town of Benin has been receiving a steady flow of patients since the first case of the waterborne disease was detected in early October. The situation is returning to where it was.

'Our efforts will be for nothing if they keep drinking from the same source', said Dr. Ahmed Kaddour, Physician.

Lebanon's poorly maintained water and sanitation infrastructure has been devastated by the economic freefall that has gripped the country over the last 3 years.

This shows how far and how fast Lebanon has fallen. A country known only a few years ago for relatively high living standards is now battling to control a disease like Cholera.

With no signs of reforms coming from Beirut, it seems likely that Dr. Kaddour and his colleagues will be battling this disease for years to come.
