Maharashtra National Law University Authorizes Menstrual Leave Policy for Students

To be entitled to the menstrual leave students must maintain a minimum attendance standard of 67 percent

Mumbai’s Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) approved a menstrual leave policy for its students. The menstrual leave policy was suggested by the student bar council and the executive council unanimously authorized it on April 4.

According to the MNLU’s official order, students will be allowed one menstrual leave per month, with a cap of 5 menstrual leave days per semester. The other features of the policy are, that there is no need for a medical certificate, and students have to self-certify in physical mode within seven days of claiming the menstrual leave. To be entitled to the menstrual leave students must maintain a minimum attendance standard of 67 percent as mandated by the university regulations and the leaves will not be applicable during examinations or viva voce.

The policy also extends its coverage to include all menstruating students on the campus guaranteeing that varied necessities are reached and valued. Dr. Pratapsinh Salunke, Register in charge at MNLU underscored the significance of inclusivity and gender justice, praising the initiative as a progressive act. He also stated the crucial nature of menstrual leaves and encouraged educational institutions to take on similar expedient approaches.

The MNLU in association with the Student Bar Association is diligently promoting awareness about menstrual health and hygiene. Further actions are in progress to improve access to menstrual hygiene products on campus and deliver counselling services for students facing menstrual-related challenges.

Similar menstrual leave policies are implemented by several national law universities in the country including NLIU Bhopal, MNLU Aurangabad, NALSAR Hyderabad, DNLU Jabalpur, and NLUJA Assam.
