Doctors at Marengo CIMS Hospital, Ahmedabad, performed Asia's first bloodless heart transplant on a 52-year-old Chandraprakash Garg, adding another feather to its cap.

The patient was suffering from ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy and end-stage heart failure. The donor, a 33-year-old, had lost his life in an accident.

The procedure was led by Dr. Dhiren Shah, Director of the Heart Transplant Program, along with Dr. Dhaval Naik, Heart Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Niren Bhavsar, Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist, and Dr. Chintan Seth, Heart Transplant Anaesthetist, and their team.

Bloodless heart transplant surgeries demand precision and meticulous surgical techniques to minimize blood loss and avoid the necessity for transfusions. This advancement is crucial due to the potential risks and complications associated with blood transfusions.

The patient was discharged within 9 days following the transplant, compared to the typical stay of 21 to 24 days in a conventional heart transplant.

The Director of the Heart Transplant Program at Marengo CIMS Hospital, Dr. Dhiren Shah, said that a bloodless heart transplant is a remarkable achievement in cardiac surgery. He said that such surgeries, following similar ones in Australia, the US, and Europe, have significantly reduced the need for blood transfusions, shortened hospital stays, lowered the risk of complications, and improved the efficiency of doctors.

The heart transplant anesthetist, Dr. Chintan Seth, said that due to the absence of blood transfusion, postoperative complications were avoided, as a result of which the patient's hospital stay was lessened.

The cardiothoracic anesthetist, Dr. Niren Bhavsar, remarked about the importance of monitoring patients for a successful result.

The Chairman of Marengo CIMS Hospital, Dr. Keyur Parikh, said that the hospital had made history by conducting Asia's first bloodless heart transplant. He further said that this achievement of the hospital marks its important role in the healthcare sector.

The Regional Director for India and South Asia, Anurag Mishra, expressed his dedication to patient care and promoting awareness regarding blood management.
