According to court documents, at first, Mrs. Wiggs was discovered by hospital staff to be conscious and attentive. However, a medical emergency was indicated, and a "code blue" was called soon after. Mrs. Wiggs was found to be unconscious and without a pulse. She was eventually declared brain dead despite attempts to revive her, and procedures were initiated to remove her organs.

The hospital staff were concerned when they noticed Mrs. Wiggs's suspicious injuries, which included a fresh wound in her throat and redness on her neck. When an off-duty policeman arrived on the scene, he witnessed Ronnie Wiggs confessing to the horrible crime and saying, "I did it; I killed her; I choked her."
