Sometimes careless human actions pose a threat to innocent animals and the environment that surrounds us. Recently an old video of a doctor removing a beach towel from a python's stomach resurfaced on social media.

The video of the incident posted on Instagram handles “invention”. The veterinarians in Australia removed the beach towel from the python's mouth. According to the Instagram post on the handle invention, the curious snake (named Monty) accidentally ate an entire beach towel, when Monty's family abruptly observed her eating something strange, they were perplexed at first until they identified the end of a beach towel sticking out of the snake’s mouth and ascertained that she had somehow swallowed the entire thing.

After confirmation, the hospital team placed a flexible endoscope down the python’s gastrointestinal tract, which allowed them to see the towel in her stomach. (Representational image: Wikimedia Commons)

They immediately rushed the 18-year-old female jungle carpet python to the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) in Sydney.  The hospital in a Facepost post in February 2020 said that the hospital team took X-rays to confirm where the towel started and ended exactly inside the snake. After confirmation, the hospital team placed a flexible endoscope down the python’s gastrointestinal tract, which allowed them to see the towel in her stomach. With the help of their internal medicine team, very long forceps were placed through the endoscope to grasp the towel. Once they had a good grip, the towel was able to be attentively removed from the gastrointestinal tract of the python with the guidance of an endoscope. They also said that it was smiles all around and they're happy to report that both Monty and beach towel have lived to see another day.

In the video, one veterinarian is seen holding the python and another pulls out the towel. The snake's body came to a normal position after pulling the extra junk. The hospital said that the python was medicated, and didn't have to feel anything during those tense moments. The python was discharged on the same day and is doing well.
