The Mizoram State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission has slapped a compensation of Rs 43,48,480 on the private hospital for alleged medical negligence.
The New Life Hospital in Aizawl is to pay a compensation of Rs. 43 lakh for alleged medical negligence resulting in the tragic death of a pregnant woman and her child.
According to reports, the decision came after a case lodged by the deceased woman's husband, Lalduhawma, in 2016 seeking justice for his wife. The deceased is identified as J. Zosangzuali.
The hospital was directed to deposit a sum of Rs 43,48,480 as a fine within 90 days with the commission; in the case of a delay in Caesarean, the hospital has to pay the compensation.
The woman was admitted to New Life Hospital in anticipation of childbirth on November 12, 2016. Despite efforts to induce labor, including the injection of Synto (oxytocin), there was no progress for eight hours. The hospital stopped the medication around 9 p.m. on the same day.
On the next day, November 13, the same treatment was given at 6:30 a.m. Although, due to complications, the woman was transferred to the ICU. Unfortunately, she gave birth to a stillborn child, and she succumbed to her condition at 4:30 pm the same day.
Her husband, Lalduhawma, registered a complaint with the commission alleging that his wife and the baby died due to medical negligence. After the incident, the hospital denied the charges.
