Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has released the Jammu-related data from the largest ICMR-India Diabetes 'INDIAB' Study, revealing alarming diabetes prevalence in Jammu region. The study shows an overall burden of 18.9% in the region, with 26.5% in urban areas and 14.5% in rural areas, surpassing the national average.

Prediabetes is another major concern, affecting 10.8% of the population in Jammu region. This underscores the urgent need for preventive measures to halt the progression to diabetes.

The study also highlights the prevalence of other Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Jammu region. Hypertension affects 27.1% of the population, while generalized obesity and abdominal obesity stand at 41.7% and 62.7%, respectively.

The Jammu phase of the study surveyed 1,520 participants across urban and rural areas, providing critical insights into the region's health landscape. These findings will inform policymakers, health professionals, and stakeholders in developing targeted interventions for prevention and management of diabetes and other NCDs.

Overall, the ICMR-INDIAB study's findings sound a warning bell, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to combat the rising burden of NCDs in Jammu region.

Dr. Jitendra Singh credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with introducing a preventive healthcare ecosystem in India, highlighting the importance of traditional medicines and yoga for health.
