Stevia, commonly known as Candy Leaf, has long been recognized for its natural sweetening properties. However, a recent study reveals its potential extends far beyond that. Researchers at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) in Guwahati discovered Stevia's therapeutic properties can combat diseases like endocrine, metabolic, immune, and cardiovascular issues.
Led by Dr. Asis Bala, Prof. Ashis K. Mukherjee, and Ms. Piyali Devroy, the team employed a multimodal strategy integrating network pharmacology with in vitro and in vivo techniques. Their findings showed Stevia inhibits a crucial cellular signaling route connected to inflammatory, autoimmune, endocrine, and cardiovascular illnesses.
Stevia suppresses Protein Kinase C (PKC) phosphorylation, altering downstream pathways that cause inflammation – a significant contributor to endocrine metabolic and cardiovascular issues. This breakthrough research published in the journal "Food Bioscience" highlights Stevia's promise in addressing various health concerns.
The study suggests Stevia may have therapeutic effects on:
Diabetes (type 1 and 2)
Autoimmune diabetes
Pre-diabetes
Chronic inflammation-related autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis)
Chronic kidney diseases
Cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, vasculopathy)
The North Eastern Council (Government of India) recognizes Stevia cultivation's potential to boost the northeast Indian economy. To fully harness Stevia's potential, clinical trials are essential to validate its therapeutic efficacy. These trials will provide invaluable insights into Stevia's effectiveness in ultimately informing the development of Stevia-based treatments.
Cultivation and Production:
Assam's favorable climate supports large-scale Stevia cultivation
Stevia farming can provide livelihood opportunities for local communities
Standardized cultivation practices ensure quality Stevia products
This groundbreaking research underscores the importance of scientific data supporting traditional therapeutic practices. As the demand for Stevia continues to grow, further studies are necessary to fully harness its medicinal properties. Investigations into Stevia's interactions with other medications are also crucial. This research enables healthcare professionals to safely integrate Stevia into existing treatment regimens.
