Dr. Béla Merkeley, a sports and interventional cardiologist from Hungary, was born on June 28, 1966. In addition to being a university professor and the director of Semmelweis University's Heart and Vascular Centre, Dr. Merkely has served as Semmelweis University's rector since July 1, 2018.

Semmelweis University was the first Hungarian higher educational institution, which started to offer an international program at the Faculty of Medicine in German in 1983 , while its international program in English started in 1987, at the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
From 1 August 2021, the founder’s, owner’s and operator’s rights of Semmelweis University are exercised by the Foundation for National Health Care and Medical Education following the model change in higher education
Semmelweis University is a research-focused institution that only offers doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate programs in the area of health sciences. Around 10,000 students attend the university, representing 60 different countries, with international students making up around 18% of the entire student body. With 4,500 students or 40% of all students at the university, the Faculty of Medicine is the largest and oldest faculty.
