Dentistry deals with teeth , gums, and encompasses practices related to the oral cavity. It generally includes the diagnosis , prevention, and treatment of oral diseases. But recent developments in dental materials , increased consciousness and awareness about perception of aesthetics among people have led to the emergence of a new branch called "cosmetic dentistry."

It has been scientifically proven that the appearance of the face, smile, and teeth has a direct impact on how people perceive a person. Cosmetic dentistry mainly deals with corrections of teeth and gums, enhancing the appearance. Different procedures for this include teeth whitening, veneers, and clear aligners.

TEETH WHITENING AND BLEACHING:

Tooth discoloration and stains have a significant negative effect on one's appearance. A variety of treatment options that harmonise smile and aesthetics are available in today's world. Teeth whitening and bleaching are two such procedures. Teeth whitening is the process of restoring the surface colour of the teeth, whereas teeth bleaching is the process of lightening the teeth beyond their natural color. These procedures may be done at home or in-office by dental professionals using materials like gel preparations of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. However, gum irritation and sensitivity are some of the risks associated with these procedures.

"My teeth had become yellow over the years as I am a coffee drinker. So I opted for the whitening treatment. I had an in-office teeth whitening session. I was seated in a dental chair and my gums were isolated with a rubber sheet so that the beaching agent wouldn't harm my gums. It was painless but had sensitivity for a few minutes after the treatment session . I am pleased with the treatment results."

VENEERS

Veneers are tooth-coloured, thin shell-like materials or coverings attached to the front surface of teeth. They are used to correct defects like gaps between teeth , crooked teeth , and discolorations on the tooth surface . Veneers can be porcelain or resin-based composite types . Porcelain veneers are expensive , stronger, and last longer than resin-based composite veneers . Despite having veneers, a person is undoubtedly vulnerable to caries if they don't practise good oral hygiene. They typically last up to 10 years when properly maintained and cared for.

The importance and desire of humans for aesthetics dates back to centuries. The Mayans were the first to use precious stones like jade as dental embellishments. This practice was often used to signify the economic standing of people. Gold teeth, where the visible or crown portion of teeth is capped with gold, are quite popular and are often used as a status symbol in South Africa, Eastern Europe, and Central Asian regions . In today's world , a diamond-faceted smile is the newest trend . Celebrities like Hailey Beiber and Katy Perry have been praised for wearing tooth gems. Teeth jewellery may beautify and enhance one's smile. However, there may be an increased risk of plaque accumulation , caries, and gum irritation.

In conclusion, knowledge about the risks associated ,maintenance and practice of good oral hygiene measures after cosmetic procedures is important for overall health and aesthetics.
