Recently, a video that demonstrated the negative impact chia seeds can have on a person's food pipe went viral. In the video, Dr. Sermed Mezher explains the potential risks associated with chia seeds. Popular superfood chia seeds are well-known for their remarkable capacity to hold onto water and swell up to 27 times their initial volume when completely hydrated. Because of this special quality, they are a great complement to a balanced diet since they are a great source of protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and other important nutrients.
The individual ingested chia seeds, which caused the seeds to absorb the water and swell, obstructing the food pipe, according to Dr. Sermed's explanation. Before eating, chia seeds should be thoroughly hydrated and given time to expand outside of the body by soaking them in water or another liquid. Usually 20 to 30 minutes is enough time to let them soak. Thus, when they are consumed, they are guaranteed to be in their healthiest and safest form, he continued.
Omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, antioxidants, and minerals are all abundant in chia seeds.
They could facilitate weight loss and lower blood cholesterol, inflammation, and triglycerides.
On the other hand, one should be aware of the possible hazards associated with chia seeds.
1) Digestive Problems: Chia seeds are a fantastic source of fiber, but for some people, too much fiber might be dangerous. Overconsumption of fiber can lead to issues such as gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. Consuming less fiber during flare-ups may be necessary for those with inflammatory bowel disease.
2) Risk of Choking: Although chia seeds are generally harmless, there is a chance that they could raise the risk of choking. So be careful when consuming them, particularly if you have trouble swallowing.
This higher danger results from the fact that when dried chia seeds come into contact with water, they swell up and absorb roughly 10–12 times their weight in liquid.
3) Allergic reaction: Allergies to chia seeds are uncommon but have been reported. In extreme situations, food allergies can even result in anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal illness that causes chest and throat tightness and difficulty breathing.
A healthy supplement to most diets, chia seeds are extremely nutritious and have a plethora of health advantages.
But moderation is essential, as consuming too much could have adverse consequences.
Chia seeds should be stopped and medical advice should be sought if you have any unfavorable effects after consuming them.
