In Indian culture, it is still common for teachers to use physical punishment as a disciplinary method in schools. Unfortunately, many parents endorse this practice, believing it is an effective way to teach discipline. However, there are instances where this form of punishment crosses the line, as evidenced by a recent shocking incident in Pune.
On September 27, an 11-year-old boy was severely beaten by his computer teacher, Sandesh Bhosale, simply because his shirt was untucked. The brutal incident took place in a classroom, where the teacher’s violent actions were caught on CCTV footage. The footage shows the teacher entering the classroom and immediately assaulting the class 6 student. Caught off guard, the boy was unable to speak or defend himself, which seemed to further enrage the teacher. The attack escalated to the point where the boy began bleeding from his nose and ears.
The terrified student later informed his parents about the assault, prompting them to take him to a hospital. Medical examinations revealed that the boy had suffered permanent damage to his eardrum as a result of the beating. The following day, his parents approached the school administration to address the incident, but their concerns were dismissed. The school officials not only denied the incident but also refused to provide any explanation or take responsibility.
Frustrated by the lack of accountability from the school, the boy’s parents sought help from an activist associated with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), a regional political party known for its advocacy efforts. Accompanied by the activist, they went to Swargate police station to file an official complaint against the teacher. Once the police began investigating the matter, the CCTV footage surfaced, providing undeniable evidence of the teacher’s violent actions.

With the video evidence in hand, the authorities took swift action, and Sandesh Bhosale was taken into police custody. However, the situation took a disturbing turn when the MNS activists, who had accompanied the boy’s family, physically assaulted the teacher in front of the police. Despite this additional instance of violence, the teacher remained in police custody pending further investigation.
This incident has sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the role of physical punishment in Indian schools. While some parents and educators continue to support corporal punishment as a disciplinary measure, incidents like these highlight the potential for such practices to result in serious harm to children. In this case, the boy suffered not only physical injury but also emotional trauma, and his life may be permanently affected by the damage to his eardrum.
