A notice was sent by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to the Chief Secretary and Government of Jharkhand asking for a thorough and detailed report within two weeks concerning the incident at Jamshedpur MGM Hospital where a woman was left unattended for 27 hours, resulting in the death of the baby inside the womb.
The details in the report should include
The availability of beds and other facilities in all the government hospitals in the state
Current health status of the women reported in the incident
And details of any compensation provided by the management to the victim’s family
According to some media sources, it was reported that on the 31st of August, a pregnant woman was referred to MGM Hospital, Jamshedpur, from a community health center to receive the best possible care. But things didn’t turn out as planned, because, after reaching the MGM Hospital, the women were forced to lie down on the floor as there were no beds available. To make matters worse, she was not attended by any medical staff, even though she was in deep labor pain for about 27 hours. Due to this medical negligence, the next day, the unborn child passed away tragically inside the womb.
It is also being reported that in a similar incident, another woman who gave birth to a child was also being treated on the floor at the MGM Hospital, raising serious concerns.
Taking this matter into account, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has swung into action and has taken suo moto cognizance of the reported incident. The NHRC said that the incident was a serious violation of human rights.
The NHRC has demanded the state government conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and formulate strategies to prevent such issues. The goal of the NHRC’s intervention is to protect fundamental human rights, especially women in need of urgent medical care, and ensure guarantee in the state's public healthcare system.
