A Bengaluru doctor has taken the help of social media to share her successful mantras for conserving water at home. In a severe water crisis affecting the region, she claimed that her methods have saved her family approximately 600 liters of water daily, with ‘zero impact’ on their lifestyle.

Dr. Divya Sharma is a dermatologist and hair specialist practicing at Dr. Divya's Skin and Hair Solution, Bengaluru, India. Dr. Divya took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share four tips to conserve water amid the ongoing water crisis in the Silicon Valley of India.

The keystone of her water-saving approach is a simple yet effective swap: avoiding overhead showers and instead choosing bucket baths. Dr. Divya explains in her post that a shower can consume around 13 liters of water per minute, while a bucket bath uses only 20 liters in total. This swap alone results in a saving of 45 liters per person, adding up to a saving of 180 liters of water for her family each day.

She further added a second mantra: Dr. Divya has installed aerators on all taps within her household, which she claims has contributed to an additional saving of around 360 liters of water.

On her third mantra, she added, “All waste water from RO is being collected in a container, and this water is used for mopping and garden use”. It is saving around 30 liters of water.

Dr. Divya wrote on the fourth mantra, “Car wash has been stopped; every day dusting and alternate day wet cloth cleaning—the car still sparkles! Single push flush use”. It is saving around 30 liters of water.

This thread of water conservation steps has gone viral, inspiring others to share their methods and stories of saving water. Dr. Divya's initiative emphasized how individual actions can lead to substantial water savings. It will offer a beacon of hope and a model for sustainable living in water-stressed areas.

Bengaluru has been struggling with a significant shortage as borewells in many areas of the city have dried up. The Mekedatu multipurpose project includes building a balancing reservoir in Ramanagara district near Kanakapura. The estimated Rs. 9,000 crore project is aimed at ensuring drinking water for Bengaluru and neighboring areas after completion.
