Kailash Vijayvargiya, a senior leader of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) was invited to a religious event to celebrate the birth anniversaries of Lord Rama and Lord Mahaveer in Indore on April 6. However, the sacred event quickly went south as Vijayvargiya got a chance to speak.
Vijayvargiya said that when he sees young people and girls inebriated, he feels like giving them five-seven slaps to sober them up. He then went on to make a remark on the clothes that women wear. He said that we think of women as goddesses, but girls who wear dirty clothes look like Surpanakha.
Surpanakha was a demoness in Ramayana. She was the sister of the demon Ravana. She is known for making advances toward Lord Rama. After he rejected her, she attacked them and Lord Lakshman cut off her nose. The comparison has sparked outrage over social media with opposition leaders and netizens criticizing Vijayvargiya. The social media users accused him of being misogynistic.
Vijayvargiya recently made another controversial remark. He said that after partition and independence, whatever was left of India constituted a "Hindu Rashtra". The statement is considered a violation of secularism in the country.
