Amid the ongoing protest by junior doctors, who have been on hunger strike following the recent incident at RG Kar Medical College over hospital security and safety, Kolkata is back in the news with a brutal attack on a patient's relative with hockey sticks and cricket stumps by unidentified assailants at Trauma Care Department of largest government-run SSKM Hospital in West Bengal on Sunday morning (October 13) leaving the victim severely injured.
As witnessed, the victim was targeted by 10-15 men who arrived in motorbikes at the trauma center and later fled the scene. The victim was identified as Sourav Modak, the son of the patient from Bankura who was set to be discharged the later day. The witnesses claimed that police officers remained inactive and did not intervene during the incident.
The people took to Twitter to voice these concerns, questioning the state's security and healthcare safety.
The injured man is undergoing treatment at the trauma center and police are investigating the incident to identify the assailants and their motives. The CCTV footage from the area was reviewed and guard rails were placed at the trauma center. This incident highlights the emptiness of the hospital administration, to safeguard people at the hospitals. This assault has also raised questions about the government's assertions of improved security in hospitals amid the ongoing protest by junior doctors.
