A 21-year-old B.Sc. nursing student lost her life by suicide at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. The second-year nursing student, who is from Sheikhpura in Bihar, was found hanging in her hostel room on Tuesday morning.
The Delhi Police received a call at approximately 11:30 AM, prompting immediate action. Upon arrival at the scene, the police found the lifeless body of the student suspended from the ceiling fan by a dupatta. Authorities quickly initiated procedures, including taking custody of the body for post-mortem examination.
Investigations into the incident revealed a note left by the girl. In the note, the student expressed her struggles with depression, which she attributed to academic demands from her nursing education and preparations for the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) test. It was revealed that she was experiencing recent challenges, failing two subjects on her final exams.
After an extensive investigation, authorities determined that there was no foul play in the incident. The parents of the deceased were immediately informed of the incident. Professor Rima Dada, the leader of the AIIMS media cell, expressed enormous regret over the loss, emphasizing its terrible impact on the institution's community.
AIIMS, a premier medical institute, is known for its tough academic programs, which draw students from all over the country. However, the challenging curriculum and strong competition can have a negative impact on students' mental well-being, demanding thorough efforts to protect their health and strength.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urged to delve deeper into the underlying factors contributing to the student's distress. Additionally, there is an urgent need for improved mental health support services and counseling facilities within educational institutions to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
