On Tuesday, a doctor employed as a tutor at a government-run medical college filed a complaint with Ahmedabad’s Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), accusing her ex-boyfriend of cheating her out of Rs 28 lakh.

The 38-year-old woman stated in her FIR that she had submitted a complaint to the city police commissioner’s office on October 27, 2023, seeking an inquiry against her former boyfriend, Dharmadeep Narela, a South Bopal resident.

The woman came into contact with Dharmadeep in 2012 when she joined the medical college and was searching the internet to buy a life insurance policy. They connected after Dharmadeep issued her the policy, and they would chat frequently. She mentioned to the police that her engagement broke off in 2017, and Dharmadeep also got divorced then.

Dharmadeep pursued her for a relationship, which she earlier ignored but later agreed to. Dharmadeep would avoid the topic of marriage, saying he would tie the knot only after setting up his own business.

The doctor accused Dharmadeep of giving him Rs. 28 lakh between 2017 and 2022 throughout their relationship, even if it meant taking personal loans to fund his business venture. But after her father’s death in 2022, as a financial crisis hit, the woman asked Dharmadeep to repay her. Dharmadeep allegedly refused, cutting off all ties with her. He allegedly threatened her with terrible consequences if she asked for the money.

DCB police have filed a complaint of cheating, breach of trust, and criminal intimidation against Dharmadeep and have started investigating the case.

This case has shed light on the personal betrayals and financial exploitation faced by individuals in intimate relationships. It also highlighted the complexities of legal recourse in such matters.
