In a terrible incident, a flat in Nalanda apartment belonging to a doctor couple was reduced to ashes after an argument between them took an ugly turn on Monday. After setting the flat on fire, the wife allegedly left for her parents’ place.
When neighbors saw flames coming from a flat, they quickly called the fire department. After a two-hour struggle, the situation was effectively handled.
The couple is identified as Govind Vaijwade (40) and Veena Vaijwade. Govind Vaijwade is a consultant neurologist, and Veena is a professor at Ayurvedic College.
Based on the complaint lodged by the neurologist, Mukundwadi police have registered an FIR against his wife, Veena.
The case has been lodged under IPC Sections 435 (mischief with fire or explosive with intent to cause damage) and 427 (mischief causing damage) against Veena.
In a fit of rage, the female doctor set fire to the bed and cupboard in the bedroom. This resulted in a rapid spread of flames that engulfed the entire room.
However, due to the quick intervention of the fire brigade, the neighboring residents were spared from life-threatening injuries.
Zone II deputy commissioner of police Navneet Kanwat told TOI that the complainant is a neurologist and he has lodged a complaint against his wife, who, too, is a medical practitioner. The preliminary probe has revealed that the couple has been engaged in a heated argument since Sunday evening.
The police officer, while describing the incident as serious, said it could have caused significant loss of life and property, and even the other residents of the apartment had been put at serious risk.
Police said that when the couple’s argument was heating up on Sunday evening, they reached out to a common family friend (also a doctor). It was then decided that Veena would stay back in the friend’s hospital for the night—so that things could cool down—and Govind would return to their flat in the Nalanda apartment.
