After a tip, the Delhi Police Special Cell this Thursday recovered 208 Kg of drugs concealed in packets of Tasty Treat and Chatpata mixture written on them. This recovery came from a rented shop in Ramesh Nagar in West Delhi.
It is the second largest haul, worth Rs 2000 crores seized by the police this week, days after a 5620-crore drug bust. Recently, Delhi police seized 560 Kg of cocaine and 40 kg of marijuana valued at over Rs 5000 crores from Afghan nationals in the Mehrauli area of Delhi.
The official announcement claims the consignment was for a UK citizen of Indian origin who is now on the run. The unidentified UK citizen managed to escape before the police reached. The police have detained the shop owner, who said his shop was rented a few days ago. On questioning, he told me the shop rental was for a garment business.
Akhlaq, a resident of the Hapur district of UP, was arrested by the Special Cell for transporting the consignment. Interrogation has led police to a UK citizen who is now absconding.
Additional SP Kushwaha said that four people, were arrested in the case. The strings of the illegal trade seem to point to links in Middle Eastern countries, Kushwaha said.
About 15 kg of cocaine was recovered from personal possession of Tushar Goel (40), Himanshu Kumar (27) and Aurangzeb (23) and Bharat Kumar (48).
The two leading National political parties continued to exchange allegations and counter-allegations. BJP accused the kingpin of being associated with the Congress party. Alleged kingpin, identified as Virender Basoiya, had met Goel in Tihar Jail in 2011. The consignment arrived in India via Dubai from South America by old cargo ships. Goel is the Chairman of the Delhi Youth Congress. The youth wing of Congress denied the allegations made by BJP, claiming them to be lies and deception to mislead the public.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah attacked Congress over the Delhi drug seizure, accusing them of turning North India into a hotspot of illegal drug trade, Shah said. He accused Tushar Goel, Chairman of the Delhi Youth Congress RTI cell.
Sharing data of the last ten years, he restated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resolve to make India drug-free. He added that the Modi government took decisive steps against the illegal trade even in Gujarat. The BJP government has seized drugs worth Rs 8500 crore in the last three years.
