In a special hearing, the Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) has suspended the licenses of four specialist doctors in the state after finding them guilty of malpractice and negligence. This decision was made during a meeting led by Dr. Nitin Vora, the former Dean of GMERS Medical College, Sola.
Out of the four doctors, three had their licenses suspended for one month. The fourth doctor faces an indefinite suspension until they appear before the council for a hearing. The disciplinary actions reflect the severity of the allegations against them.
According to sources, two of the doctors were found guilty of insurance fraud, while the other two faced charges of medical negligence. The GMC's ruling underscores the council's commitment to maintaining ethical standards in the medical profession.
According to a recent report by the Times of India, the Gujarat Medical Council (GMC) took disciplinary action against four specialist doctors following serious allegations of malpractice. The GMC received a complaint from an insurance company accusing a Vadodara-based gynaecologist of fraudulently admitting a paediatrician to his hospital, Dwenz Multispecialty Hospital, in order to claim insurance money. The investigation confirmed that the doctors had forged a signature to facilitate the fraudulent claim, leading to a one-month suspension of their licenses.
In another case, a complaint was lodged by a patient from Himmatnagar against an orthopaedic surgeon who allegedly left a piece of gauze in the patient's leg after surgery. The patient provided a video as evidence, which was later verified through forensic examination. Based on these findings, the GMC suspended the orthopaedic surgeon's license for a month.
Additionally, the GMC addressed a complaint against another orthopaedic surgeon at Veraval Civil Hospital. This doctor repeatedly failed to attend the council's hearings despite being summoned four times. Consequently, the GMC suspended his license for non-compliance with the disciplinary process.
A GMC official commented on the unusual nature of these disciplinary actions, noting that one doctor had multiple opportunities to present his case but failed to do so. The official emphasized that the suspensions were carried out in accordance with the IMC Regulations, 2002. This string of actions reflects the council’s firm stance on maintaining ethical standards among medical professionals in the state.
