In a medical breakthrough, doctors at Sahyadri Hospital, Pune successfully removed a large fibroid from a broad ligament using a small incision, similar to what is done in a caesarean section.
In the first week of February, a myomectomy procedure was performed on a 35-year-old businesswoman, Riya (name changed). The case represented a unique challenge because of the size and location of the fibroid. The procedure consisted of taking out a 5-kg fibroid from the broad ligament using a small cut, like the one made during a C-section. The surgery takes around 2–4 hours and is typically performed under general anesthesia.
Notably, a myomectomy is a surgical procedure in which the myoma, or uterine fibroid tumor, is removed from the uterus while preserving the surrounding tissue.
Dr. Mini Salunkhe, who is the Director and Head of Department, Obstetrics, led the expert team of doctors of MomStory at Sahyadri hospitals, who decided to take a unique approach instead of a traditional one.
Riya had been experiencing continual pain for the past three months, prompting a thorough examination that revealed the presence of a large fibroid. Dr. Gauri Jagdale, a gynecologist and obstetrician, prescribed a myomectomy as the optimal treatment after an MRI scan confirmed the diagnosis.
The surgery, which was highlighted for its unique approach, involved a Pfannenstiel incision. This is typically used in cesarean sections. This method allowed the removal of the significant fibroid through a smaller incision. Doctors said that the decision to use a Pfannenstiel incision provided a minimally invasive yet effective approach, allowing for a quicker recovery.
Now, Riya is free from the burden of her fibroid. She is looking forward to getting back to her business and her life.
