A potential conspiracy surrounding the tragic death of a PGT doctor at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, has come to light, as details from the charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) suggest efforts to cover up the incident. The event, which took place on August 9, 2024, between 9:30 am and 11:30 am, has raised significant questions regarding the involvement of former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and other officials, including former Tala police station officer-in-charge (OC) Abhijit Mandal.

According to the CBI’s findings, the deceased doctor’s body was discovered in an awkward position with uncovered legs between 9:30 am and 9:35 am on the morning of August 9. The doctor who first came across the body immediately alerted others in the vicinity. Her guide, Dr. Sumit Roy Tapadar, inspected the victim and observed her eyes half-open, with dilated and fixed pupils. The CBI concluded that she had already passed away at the time of discovery.

Following this, Sandip Ghosh, who was then serving as the principal of the institution, was informed of the situation. Simultaneously, the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College was notified. Kolkata Police sources have indicated that all of these developments had occurred by 10:10 am.

However, discrepancies emerged when the victim’s parents shared their account with the CBI. Investigators noted that the first phone call to the family was made at 10:53 am, during which they were told that their daughter was unwell. A second call was placed at 11:15 am, during which the parents were informed that their daughter had died by suicide. The CBI has raised concerns about why the family was not informed earlier, given that the victim’s death had already been detected before 10:10 am.

In addition to these concerns, the CBI charge sheet pointed to a 10-hour delay in the preparation of the seizure memo by the Tala police station. The Unnatural Death (UD) case, numbered 861, was not registered until 11:30 pm on the night of August 9, and the First Information Report (FIR), numbered 52/2024, was filed 15 minutes later at 11:45 pm. The FIR was based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s father.

The CBI charge sheet further alleged that Sandip Ghosh and OC Abhijit Mandal’s omissions were deliberate and intended to cover up the circumstances surrounding the doctor’s death, with possible evidence being destroyed in the process. Investigators are now analyzing over 170 photographs of the seminar hall, where the body was found, and surrounding areas to determine whether other individuals may have been involved in a larger conspiracy.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the CBI continues to examine evidence, including photographic material, to establish any further links and uncover the full extent of the alleged cover-up.
