Some new revelations have come to the fore in the continuing investigation of the shocking rape and murder of a young doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, clearing the air of some previous misunderstandings. The post-mortem report says nothing of finding 150 grams of semen on the body of the victim, as claimed on social media. Instead, it explains that the 150 grams refer to the weight of the victim's uterus in a standard anatomical measurement in such examinations, the forensic experts said upon reviewing the report.

The forensic team visited the crime scene several hours after the event, due to the time factor all bodily fluids had dried up, making sample collection difficult. Body fluid samples such as blood, semen, and swabs from the vaginal canal were collected by the forensic teams based on whatever was available and were also bagged and dispatched to the Central Forensic Laboratory at Kolkata for testing. The delay in sample collection and dispatch is a standard issue in forensic processes, which requires elaborate documentation and handling.

Such DNA analysis of the samples taken may lead to the very core of the investigation process, as it may be able to pin down the people behind the crime. Senior forensic scientists said that the process of DNA profiling was time-consuming, but very accurate, and will point out whether the crime was committed by a single individual or multiple perpetrators.

As the investigation gets underway, a forensic report from the Central Forensic Laboratory is awaited by the mid of this week, the results of which would be forwarded to the CBI. The findings would be pivotal in advancing the case and ensuring that the responsible group will be held accountable.
