On Wednesday, the membership of Sandip Ghosh was suspended by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
Dr. Sandip Ghosh was the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the very college where a 31-year-old trainee was brutally raped and murdered. The decision made by IMA was announced during the ongoing CBI investigation for the crime.
The decision to suspend, the vice president of the association’s Kolkata branch was taken by the disciplinary committee. In an official statement, the IMA announced that a committee established by IMA National President Dr. R V Asokan, on his own initiative has taken up the investigation into the rape and murder case involving a postgraduate resident doctor. The committee also addressed the subsequent matters at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The general secretary of the IMA along with Asokan visited the victims home and met her parents. The order read,
They had put up their grievances against you (Ghosh) in dealing with the situation as well as lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the issue in appropriate manner befitting the responsibility held by you in your dealings with them.The IMA Bengal state branch as well as certain associations’ of doctors also have demanded action citing the nature of disrepute brought by you to the profession on the whole

The order stated that the disiplinary committee had come together and decided to suspend Sandip from being a member in the IMA.
