Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the next big thing and has many applications in healthcare as well. However, can you imagine using your voice to help diagnose your next illness?

That's exactly what is happening at the University of South Florida Health Voice Centre. Dr. Yael Bensoussan, a renowned voice expert, treats patients with a range of voice disorders such as upper airway, voice, and swallowing disorders.

Lately, she has been working on a new government project of building a database of 30,000 human voice recordings and training computers to detect diseases through changes in the human voice.

The team consists of 45 investigators working across 12 universities in North America as well as a start-up in Europe. They study voice samples to detect diseases like Parkinson's disease, Glottic cancer, and Vocal Fold Paralysis. The team can also detect mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

The study is one of the four data generation projects funded by the National Institutes of Health bridged to an artificial intelligence program designed to use AI to tackle complex biomedical challenges.
