In a tragic incident, a third-year MBBS student at the Government Stanley Medical College was allegedly found dead inside his hostel room in Seven Wells on Wednesday.

The deceased, identified as Ranjith Pal, was a 25-year-old student and a native of Ernakulam in Kerala. He was found unconscious lying on his bed, and broken ampoules of two drugs and a syringe were found in his room.

The incident came to light on Wednesday when some classmates of the student went to his room after they found him missing from class and campus.

Although the door was locked from the inside, they repeatedly knocked on it, but the student failed to respond. Finding it doubtful, they contacted the hostel security, who finally broke open the door and found the student in an unconscious state in his bed. Ranjith was immediately rushed to the Medical College hospital, where he was declared dead. After the post-mortem, his body will be handed over to his family members. His parents have already reached the city in the evening after receiving his demise news from the college authorities. However, the reason behind his death remains unknown, and the police have not ruled it a suicide. The police have launched an investigation to determine the possibility of any foul play.

A police officer informed TNIE that they went to the hostel and broke open the door. They found him lying unconscious with a syringe and two empty vials near him. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead. The body was then sent for a postmortem. They are not ruling out death by suicide.

The forensic examination was on, and further investigation would be conducted based on the post-mortem report and forensic report, a senior officer of Greater Chennai Police told IANS.

While speaking on the incident, Dr. P. Balaji, Stanley Hospital dean, told TOI that it was a powerful combination and that the dose of drugs would have killed him in less than three minutes. He was brought to the ER, where doctors declared him dead.

The police have filed a report of unnatural death. An investigation is in progress.
