The victim has been named as 32-year-old Saranitha, a Namakkal district native who was enrolled in a post-graduate medical program in Coimbatore after completing her MBBS. She was residing in Coimbatore with her physician husband, Udayakumar. She arrived in the city on May 1st, in preparation for her one-month training program at the Institute of Mental Health campus here.

She was attending the training program and lodging at a women's hostel on K.H. Road in Ayanavaram. Her husband attempted to reach her on Sunday, May 26, 2024, but she did not answer his calls. Since it was Sunday, at first he assumed she was asleep in the morning. When she failed to reply at all, he became suspicious and called the hostel's manager.
