A father in Yulin, southern China, has stirred up debate by disciplining his 3-year-old daughter Jiajia for watching too much television. The incident took place when the father was making dinner and called his daughter to the table, but she couldn't hear him because she was watching TV.
Jiajia started crying as the father, furious, turned off the television. Then he handed her a big empty bowl and stated, "When your tears fill this bowl, you can watch TV again." According to media sources, the girl's mother recorded Jiajia trying to catch her tears and straining her eyes to release more in a video that showed her holding the bowl beneath her face.
Jiajia gave up on the assignment after more than ten seconds, claiming that her hands were tired from holding the dish.
After that, the father asked Jiajia to smile, and her parents found joy in seeing their daughter smile while crying. The Douyin video went viral, receiving 220,000 likes and a range of responses from viewers. Jiajia's father's parenting style was criticized by some, while many thought she was cute.
China is known for its strict parenting styles. Some parents go to extreme measures to impart life lessons to their kids, while others adopt the opposite strategy by giving in to their kids' needs. To teach his 11-year-old daughter the value of education, a father in Hubei province in 2022 made her search for lotus roots in the sweltering sun.
