A 55-year-old quack who was working as a doctor and prescribing Allopathy medications without holding an MBBS degree has been booked by the Medical Officer of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). The accused quack, named only as Dagdu Sahebrao Thackeray, is a graduate of the Bachelor of Electro-homeopathy Medicine and Surgery (BEMS), an Indian medical program that is no longer recognized.
After examining a list of eleven BEMS graduates from Navi Mumbai to see if any of them were still in practice, the corporation discovered that Thackeray was still in practice.
"BEMS graduates are not permitted to identify themselves as doctors or use the 'Dr' abbreviation in front of their names. It is not their place to recommend allopathic medications. It was discovered that Thackeray operated a clinic where he prescribed allopathic medications and prefixed his name with "Dr." Syringes from the clinic and allopathy medications were discovered, according to an NMMC medical officer.
Dr. Pravin Katke of NMMC conducted the raid on July 5 and filed a case with Rabale MIDC police under sections 319 (2) (Whoever cheats by personation) and 318 (4) (Whoever cheats and thereby dishonestly induces the person) of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) as well as section 33 of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act, 1961.
A police official from the Rabale MIDC police station stated, "We have issued a notice to the accused and the investigations are ongoing."
