The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, will observe National Milk Day on November 26, 2024, at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi. The event celebrates the 103rd birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien, renowned as the Father of the White Revolution, and underscores the dairy sector’s contributions to India’s economy and nutritional security.

The occasion will be graced by Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) as the Chief Guest, along with Ministers of State Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel and Shri George Kurian. Several dignitaries and stakeholders from the dairy sector will also attend.

National Gopal Ratna Awards: Recognizing Excellence

A key highlight of the event will be the National Gopal Ratna Awards, one of the highest honors in the livestock and dairy sector. The awards will be presented in three categories:

  1. Best Dairy Farmer rearing indigenous breeds.

  2. Best Artificial Insemination Technician.

  3. Best Dairy Cooperative Society (DCS), Milk Producer Company, or Dairy Farmer Producer Organization.

Special awards will also be introduced to recognize winners from the North Eastern Region. Selected awardees will share their experiences, offering insights into best practices, innovations, and sustainable approaches that have driven their success.

Launch of Publications: Data-Driven Progress

Two significant publications will be unveiled during the celebration:

1. Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) - 2024:

This publication will present comprehensive data on the livestock and dairy sector, derived from the Integrated Sample Survey (March 2023 - February 2024). Key insights include state-wise production estimates of milk, eggs, meat, and wool, alongside data on veterinary infrastructure, artificial inseminations, and the global livestock perspective.

2. Manual on the Identification of Elite Cows:

This manual aims to guide the formation of a national milch herd composed of superior dairy animals, emphasizing technological advancements and evidence-based policymaking.

All India Motor Rally: Uniting the Nation

The culmination of the All India Motor Rally, organized by Amul in partnership with Bajaj Auto, will add excitement to the event. Having commenced on November 19, 2024, from Himmatnagar, Gujarat, the rally will conclude at the Manekshaw Centre. Participants from across the country will arrive at Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi, before being welcomed by Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh.

Panel Discussions: Promoting Inclusive Growth

Two engaging panel discussions will also take place:

1. Women-Led Livestock and Dairy Sector:

This discussion will explore the transformative role of women in the dairy sector, highlighting gender inclusivity and empowerment.

2. Empowering Farmers Through Local Veterinary Support:

This session will focus on strengthening local veterinary systems, essential for rural economic development and sustainable farming.

Countrywide Participation and Objectives

The event will witness participation from across India, including farmers, dairy cooperatives, and milk federations. National Milk Day 2024 aims to celebrate India’s leadership in the global dairy sector, while emphasizing the importance of sustainability, innovation, and inclusive growth. The dedication of stakeholders in the livestock and dairy industries will be acknowledged, encouraging continued collaboration and progress.
