After a junior doctor was brutally raped and killed on hospital grounds on August 9, a number of female doctors at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital fled the campus out of terror.
Junior doctors have stated that nearly every accommodation in the medical college, except for the nursing hostel, has been abandoned.
Before the event, over 160 younger women doctors were staying on campus, according to a student at the RG Kar College and Hospital who spoke with The Indian Express. Only 17 women remain at the hostel as of right now, though.
“After August 9, students started to leave the campus. Some returned a couple of days later. But after the attack on the hospital by miscreants on the night of August 14, more students, especially the girls, left,” a student said, as quoted by the media organization.
The nurses that remain on campus stated that although they are afraid, they are at a loss on what to do. According to the report, there are two nearly full nursing hostels on site.
“Even after such scary incidents, we are doing night duties and sometimes we find ourselves alone in a ward. We are now really feeling unsafe,” a nurse stated.
A mob damaged the demonstration site, cars, and public property on the evening of August 14 when they broke into the RG Kar Hospital campus, where protests against the rape and death of a trainee doctor were taking place. Additionally, they destroyed CCTVs and vandalized the hospital's emergency room, nursing home, and pharmacy.
Many female doctors departed the campus after the incident.
Aparajita Singh, a senior attorney, claims that following the vandalism event, only roughly 30–40 female and 60–70 male resident doctors remained on campus.
