Patanjali Ayurveda, which is co-owned by yoga guru Ramdev, was found to have posted misleading and false advertisements. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heavily criticized the Center for doing nothing in response to this.
The Supreme Court claimed, “The government is sitting with its eyes closed.”
According to the Supreme Court, these kinds of commercials deceive the entire nation and are regrettable. The bench declared that the government would have to act right away.
The bench directed the company to immediately stop all print and electronic advertisements for its medications that provided false information.
In November 2023, Patanjali Ayurveda received a warning from the Supreme Court about making false and misleading claims in their advertisements regarding their medicines.
The bench led by the now-retired CJI NV Ramana stated at the time, “Whatever became of this Swami Ramdev Baba, the Guru? In the end, we honor him for making yoga more widely known. Everyone aims for this. He shouldn’t, however, be critical of the other system. Advertisements that portray all doctors as murderers or something similar are common. Huge ads have been given.”.
The Center’s lawyer had been asked by the top court to come up with a remedy to the problem of deceptive medical advertising.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) cited several advertisements that reportedly painted allopathy and its practitioners in a negative light. The IMA further emphasized that companies that produce ayurvedic medicines have also made disparaging statements to deceive the public.
The IMA’s legal representative stated that these advertisements claim that doctors are dying even though they take modern medications.
